Nurture Creativity Via building A Smart Vending Machine

In today's era of rapid digitalization and smart technology development, how does the role of a STEAM-led education form an indispensable and important part of learning at schools?

In order to let students experience a different kind of experiential learning, Creato developed a pioneered course that offers students to learn about building, designing and operating their own smart vending machines at schools. The hope is to lead students to deeply explore this field, uncover the various possibilities of smart vending machines, and thereby cultivate their innovative thinking.


This course provides students with knowledge and skills on hardware assembly, software and multimedia design, as well as related Internet of Things (IoT) applications, with the aim that they can deeply understand the operating principles of smart vending machines through practice and innovation, and learn how to apply STEAM knowledge to solve other real-world problems in the future.


At the beginning of the whole course, students will be in teams of 2-3 to construct their own smart vending machines from scratch. By understanding the characteristics and purposes of various hardware, they will learn how to choose and configure different hardware parts for the vending machine. They will also gain foundational knowledge of electronic circuits, as well as learn how to program and control the functions of smart vending machines. Through the cooperation of hardware and software, the smart vending machine can operate smoothly. At the same time, students will be exposed to multimedia design, learning how to create attractive user interfaces (UIs)and interactive experiences to enhance the functionality and appeal of the vending machine. While students are building their own smart vending machines, the course aims to let students learn and understand related hard skills and soft techniques.




One of the highlights of this course is the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) involved in smart vending machines. Students will learn how to implement intelligent and digital management of vending machines through different sensors, wireless communication, and data analysis techniques, forming an intelligent network for real-time data collection, analysis, and application. This not only effectively enhances students' knowledge and skills in innovative technologies but also inspires their exploration and curiosity about IoT and future technologies.

The course is designed to provide students with a unique and interesting learning opportunity. By integrating STEAM learning and creativity, students will learn about technology, engineering, and design in the classroom, and explore the future trends and impacts of IoT applications. This helps them develop comprehensive abilities, lay a solid foundation in the field of innovative technologies, and cultivate creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork spirit, all of which are important qualities required in today’s society and future workplaces.
