About The Competition

Integrating AI with Aviation Science
The AI x Aviation Inter-school Competition 2025 - STARLUX Cup bridges 2 of the most future-forward domains — Artificial Intelligence & Aviation Science.
Students will explore how AI can be applied to realistic aviation scenarios, gaining firsthand experience in weather-informed flight planning, efficiency analysis, and intelligent decision-making under constraints. These interdisciplinary challenges fuel creativity and innovation, and nurture essential skills like teamwork, communication, and practical problem-solving.
Co-organising with The Hong Kong Association for Computer Education (HKACE), sponsored by STARLUX Airlines, and supported by HK Tech 300 & HKAI Lab - the two competition challenges: AI Flight Planning Challenge & Flight Simulator Challenge are the golden gateways for young talents to dive into the exciting intersection of AI & aviation.
AI Flight Planning Challenge
Challenge:
Student teams will use simulated weather data and AI tools to design a safe, fuel-efficient transpacific flight route from Taipei (TPE) to Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) or Seattle (SEA).

Objectives:
-
Understand how AI can be used to optimize flight paths based on real-world
weather data. -
Analyze multiple route systems.
-
Apply AI tools and critical thinking to choose the safest and most fuel-efficient
route. -
Communicate their decision-making process in a 3-min team presentation.
Each Team To Complete:
-
A visualized flight route
-
A short (3-min) team presentation:
1. Why this route?
2. What data was considered?
3. How AI supported the decision
4. Fuel efficiency and safety rationale
Assessment Criteria:
-
Fuel Efficiency
-
Safety
-
AI Usage
-
Presentation
-
Teamwork
Flight Simulator Challenge
Challenge:
Student teams will safely and accurately manoeuvre a simulated single piston-engine airplane according to designated instructions, their hand-eye coordination and understanding of real-world flight dynamics and piloting skills will be tested.

Objectives:
-
Understand basic flight maneuvers and aircraft control techniques.
-
Demonstrate coordination and communication between pilot roles
(Pilot-Flying & Pilot-Monitoring). -
Apply real-time decision-making under simulated flight conditions.
-
Experience the dynamics of flying through hands-on simulator use.
-
Strengthen teamwork and problem-solving skills in a high-focus environment.
Each Team To Complete:
-
Complete a series of manoeuvres in given time flying a Cessna 152 (classic cockpit).
-
Maneuver items i.e. takeoff, climbing turn, straight & level, steep turns etc.
-
Task Management between Pilot Flying (PF) & Pilot Monitoring (PM).
Assessment Criteria:
-
Team coordination
-
Accuracy of maneuvers
-
Smoothness and control
